Moscow (dpa) - Russia has expelled "four German embassy members," the Germany Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Germany earlier this week expelled four Russian diplomats in solidarity with Britain, which accuses Russia of perpetrating a chemical weapon attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Britain this month.

"This news from Moscow comes as no surprise," the German Foreign Ministry said in an emailed statement. "We had not taken the decision to expel the Russian diplomats lightly."

"Our reaction in the Skripal case was necessary and appropriate as a political signal, out of solidarity with the United Kingdom and because Russia has refused to give any clarification of the facts," the statement said.
