EXTRA Merkel warns German car industry it is 'gambling' with public trust

Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel said the German car industry must adopt changes in the wake of the emissions scandal or risk losing the public‘s trust.

"We want a strong auto car industry," said Merkel. "But we also want high environmental standards."

"The industry is gambling with (people‘s) confidence," the chancellor said.
