London/Washington (dpa) - British Prime Minister Theresa May has welcomed the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats from the United States in response to the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

May told US President Donald Trump during a call Wednesday that the US delivered "a very strong response," according to a statement released by the British government.

She also welcomed the breadth of international action, noting that 26 countries now have put expulsions in place. A White House statement said both leaders agreed on the importance of dismantling Russia‘s spy networks in Britain and the US.

May also welcomed the temporary exemption to steel and aluminium tariffs announced by the US last week in relation to the European Union and looked forward to constructive talks on making the exemption permanent.
