Paris (dpa) - French President Emmanuel Macron has told his Malian counterpart Ibrahim Boubacar Keita that France will keep up its role in the fight against jihadists in Mali and the wider Sahel region.

"France will remain by your side, with utter determination, for the security of not just Mali but also the Sahel, continuing the engagement of our forces," Macron said during a visit to a French military base in Gao in the north of the country.

The French president, inaugurated on Sunday, said he was visiting "to pay tribute to, and show my confidence in, the men and women who are fighting for security - the security of Mali, of the Sahel and of France."
