Washington (dpa) - The foreign ministers of the G7 countries and the EU‘s foreign policy chief have demanded that those responsible for the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi be held to account.

In a statement, the ministers affirmed their "commitment to defending freedom of expression and protection of a free press."

"We remain very troubled by the disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Those bearing responsibility for his disappearance must be held to account," they said.

"We encourage Turkish-Saudi collaboration and look forward to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conducting a thorough, credible, transparent, and prompt investigation, as announced."

The G7 comprises the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Japan and Italy.
