Paris (dpa) - The French Senate has approved by a large majority a law proposed by the government to help deal with the threat of terrorism.

The law, which enshrines restricted versions of emergency powers into ordinary law, was passed by 244 votes to 22 with 73 abstentions.

Senators were voting on a final compromise text after the National Assembly agreed to a Senate amendment that most of the new powers would expire in 2020.

The law has already been approved by the National Assembly and will now go to President Emmanuel Macron for signature.
