Brussels (dpa) - British Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agree on the need to send a strong message to Russia following the nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergey Skripal and his daughter.

During a meeting on the sidelines of Thursday‘s EU summit in Brussels, the three leaders "reaffirmed that there is no plausible explanation other than that the Russian state was responsible," a British government spokesperson said in a statement.

"The leaders agreed on the importance of sending a strong European message in response to Russia‘s actions," the statement added.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said it was important to maintain channels of communication with Moscow. "Without giving up our values, without giving away our principles, we must confer with our direct neighbours in Europe," he said.
