Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Thiago da Silva outfoxes mighty Renaud Lavillenie to claim a stunning pole vault gold for Olympic hosts Brazil.

Da Silva soared a personal best 6.03 metres in front of an ecstatic crowd shortly before midnight to beat the shocked world record holder and 2012 gold medallist Lavillenie who had to settle for silver with 5.98m.

American Sam Kendricks got bronze with 5.85m in a thrilling competition which was delayed by one hour due to a heavy rainstorm.

Da Silva raised his personal best by 10cm to get Brazil‘s first ever medal in the men‘s pole vault and their first in the Rio athletics events.
