EXTRA: Somalia has chance for peace, says UN's Ban
Europe
23.02.2012
London (dpa) - Somalia has an opportunity to end the cycle of
violence and poverty that has beset the East African state for the
past two decades, UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon said in London
Thursday.
Speaking at the opening of an international conference on Somalia, Ban said that a "new horizon" was beckoning for the country which now had an "opportunity to end" years of turmoil.
But he admitted that the international community was "far from its goal to eliminate piracy" in Somalia.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is hosting the conference, announced the establishment of a local stability fund for Somalia to help rural development and said that Britain would provide a further 51 million pounds (80 million dollars) to assist Somali refugees in Kenya and Ethiopia. dpa aet mat
