Rome (dpa) - Italians may have to return to the polls if preliminary projections from Sunday and Monday‘s general election are confirmed to show no coalition having a clear majority in both houses of parliament, a centre-left official said Monday.

"If things stand as they are, the next parliament will be ungovernable," said Enrico Letta, deputy secretary of the Democratic Party.

"A new electoral law will be done immediately and we will go back to the polls," Letta told Italian state television RAI.

Initial exit polls had predicted a solid victory for the centre-left, but projections later placed the conservative coalition of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi ahead in the race for the Senate. dpa npr
