Washington (dpa) - The United States‘ top intelligence official asserted on Tuesday that the epicentre of European power is shifting from Germany to France.

Speaking at a Senate intelligence committee hearing on threats to national security, Daniel Coats, the director of national security, said that Europe‘s "gravitational centre" seemed to be moving from Germany to France.

He referenced Germany‘s inconclusive election in September, which has so far failed to produce a government.

Chancellor Angela Merkel is in the final stages of forming a coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats, but nearly five months without a government has caused uncertainty among European allies and in Brussels.

Coats, a Republican from Indiana, served as the US ambassador to Germany in the first term of president George W Bush‘s administration.
