Vienna (dpa) - Greece has indicated some level of flexibility to reach an agreement with its international creditors, European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Thursday after talks in Athens.

Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras said at the meeting on Wednesday that his government would not agree to any more austerity measures that would be have to be shouldered by Greek citizens.

However, the EU commissioner for economic and financial affairs told reporters in Vienna that his talks with Tsipras proved that "they are ready for some efforts," as long as there was also room for policies that benefit the people, such as job-creation programmes.

"It‘s clear that there is a need now to show to the people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel of austerity," said Moscovici, who was in Vienna for talks with Austrian financial leaders.

In order to receive further bailout money, Greece must implement reforms of its labour market and energy sector, among other areas. Previous talks on the reforms had failed.

Billion-euro payments on Greek debt are due in the summer, but the debt-stricken Greek government is unlikely to be able to afford them on its own.

EU institutions, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Greece have been aiming to reach an agreement in time for Monday‘s meeting of eurozone finance ministers.

A deal could be reached "with little effort from all stakeholders," Moscovici said.
