EU seeks to push down cross-border parcel delivery costs

Strasbourg, France (dpa) - EU lawmakers voted Tuesday for clearer information on the cost of sending parcels from one member state to another, with a view to bringing down delivery costs.

Cross-border parcel shipments within the European Union are three to five times more expensive than domestic prices on average, according to the European Commission. The issue is a big factor in preventing people from shopping online in member states other than their own.

In future, parcel delivery services will have to provide their tariffs, which the commission will publish on a comparative website. The aim is to encourage competition and bring down "unreasonable" price differences, the European Parliament said in a statement.

The proposal was approved by 604 lawmakers, with 80 against and 12 abstentions. It must now be endorsed by EU member states, a move that is expected to be a formality.
