EU says it will send observers to Gambia elections

Brussels (dpa) - The European Union said Monday it will deploy officials to observe upcoming parliamentary elections in Gambia, following an invitation to do so by Gambian authorities.

Democracy was restored to the West African nation in January after long-standing autocrat Yahya Jammeh gave in to international pressure and eventually conceded electoral defeat to Adama Barrow, ending weeks of tense political impasse.

Now president, Barrow has vowed to usher in a new era of government following Jammeh‘s 22-year rule.

The EU said in an online statement that its observers will monitor parliamentary elections set for April 6.
