Brussels (dpa) - The European Union has reacted positively to Italian fencer Elisa di Francisca‘s decision to fly the European flag at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Di Francisca displayed the flag after winning the silver medal in the individual foil.

Mina Andreeva, a spokesperson for EU executive body the European Commission, said that Di Francisca‘s display was "a nice gesture" and that the commission is "very positive about it."

Di Francisca said that she displayed the flag in tribute to the lives lost in recent terrorist attacks in Europe, such as those in Brussels and Paris.

"I did it to send a message: Europe exists and it is united," she said. "I did it for Brussels and for Paris. If we stay united then we can beat terrorism.

"We will not let ISIS win. Their goal is to keep us locked up in our own homes, but they will not succeed."
