EU position on Jerusalem 'unchanged,' leaders agree after US move

Brussels (dpa) - The European Union‘s position on Jerusalem is "unchanged," one of the bloc‘s top officials said during a summit of EU leaders, following the controversial US decision to recognize the city as the capital of Israel.

"EU leaders reiterate firm commitment to the two-state solution and, in this context, the EU position on Jerusalem remains unchanged," European Council President Donald Tusk wrote on Twitter late Thursday.

The two-state solution foresees the existence of an Israeli and a Palestinian state with the final status of Jerusalem as the shared capital to be finalized in direct talks.

US President Donald Trump sparked a diplomatic firestorm last week when he declared Jerusalem the Israeli capital and decided to move the country‘s embassy there, upending decades of US policy.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the move was "very worrying" and had the "potential to send us backwards to even darker times."

Earlier this week, she said that EU countries would not move their embassies, following a rare visit to Brussels by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. EU foreign ministers are due to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas early next year.

Israel declared Jerusalem as its capital with the establishment of the state in 1948. However, the city remained divided between West Jerusalem, controlled by Israel, and East Jerusalem, controlled by Jordan.

In the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the eastern half of Jerusalem, now home to over 300,000 Palestinians, and later annexed the territory in a move that was not internationally recognized.
