EU parliament halves salary for Farage to recoup misspent funds

Brussels (dpa) - The European Parliament is withholding half the monthly salary of EU lawmaker Nigel Farage, who spearheaded Britain‘s Brexit campaign, after an investigation found that he had misspent public funds, a source in the EU legislature has confirmed.

Farage, who formerly led the eurosceptic UK Independence Party (UKIP), will lose an overall 40,000 euros (48,590 dollars), after auditors at the European Parliament found that he had misspent the money, the Guardian newspaper reported Friday.

The inquiry focused on the role of an assistant hired to work with Farage at the EU legislature but who was also appointed to a domestic role within UKIP, despite his salary coming out of EU coffers.

Farage‘s salary as an EU lawmaker is 8,484 euros monthly, according to the Guardian, meaning it will take until October 2018 for him to pay off the money due.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has come under fire for a similar issue, with the EU legislature seeking a repayment of 340,000 euros that she had claimed back for the salaries of two supposed aides who were actually working for her party.
