EU leaders to reject progress in Brexit talks despite May's efforts

Brussels (dpa) - A last-ditch effort by British Prime Minister Theresa May to convince the remaining 27 EU countries to move Brexit talks on to the next phase seems to have fallen on deaf ears, judging by the response of several EU leaders early Friday.

May made a strong plea over dinner Thursday for EU leaders to green-light moving on to talks about Britain‘s future relationship with the bloc - despite the fact that key issues on Britain‘s departure remain unresolved.

"It was her best performance yet - in the sense that it conveyed a warm, candid and sincere appeal that she wants progress to be made, that she has moved in her position - so I think that was appreciated," said Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

"But I believe it hasn‘t really changed anything from before that."

The 27 leaders are expected to adopt a statement later Friday acknowledging new momentum in the talks and approving the start of internal preparatory talks within the so-called EU-27 on a possible future relationship.

However, they will note that there hasn‘t been sufficient progress on three core issues of the divorce talks - citizens‘ rights, the Irish border and a financial settlement - that would allow the sides to actually begin talks over a future relationship, including trade.

"We have some details, but we do not have all the details we need," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters Friday.
