EU lawmakers want bigger budget despite Brexit

Strasbourg, France (dpa) - The European Union must find new revenue sources for a post-2020 long-term budget that not only makes up for the shortfall caused by Britain‘s exit but can also be expanded to finance pressing issues, such as migration, EU lawmakers said.

The European Parliament passed two resolutions on Wednesday setting out their funding priorities for the next budget and how it should be financed.

The bloc‘s lawmakers recommended raising the ceiling of the EU budget from the current 1 per cent of the bloc‘s Gross National Income (GNI) to 1.3 per cent of GNI.

The parliament sees such an increase to the EU budget necessary to be able to address pressing political issues, such migration, climate change, defence and security, while also keeping up current levels of assistance to farmers and poorer regions.

Lawmakers also want to boost funding for research and educational programmes to help young people and also up support for small- and medium-size businesses.

However, where the money will come from for the future budget is a pressing question as Britain, an important net contributor, is set to exit the bloc in March 2019.

Even with a transitional period foreseen to last until the end of 2020, which would require the country to continue contributions, Britain is not expected to be part of the next EU budget.

Lawmakers recommended filling the funding gap and even increasing the EU budget not from member states‘ contributions but from new sources of revenue, such as taxing companies, especially in the digital sector.
