Rome (dpa) - The number of migrants trying to reach Europe from Maghreb countries by crossing the Mediterranean is rising, according to the latest figures from EU border agency Frontex.

Although some 5,600 fewer migrants overall reached Italy in September, when compared to the same month last year, the number of arrivals from Algeria and Tunisia increased compared to the previous month, Frontex said.

In September, Frontex registered a total of 13,900 illegal border crossings over the four main migrant routes: the central, western and eastern Mediterranean, and the so-called Balkan Route overland.

The total for the first nine months of the year was 156,000.

The number heading for Spain has grown markedly, with 14,800 arriving since the start of the year - double the same period last year. Most come from Morocco, Algeria and the Ivory Coast, Frontex said.
