Black Gold: Kaolinite Mountain and its history

The Upper Palatinate was known as the Ruhrpott of the Middle Ages (an area in Germany famous for its industrial heart similar to the Black Country in England) and was at the centre of ore, tin and silver mining trade until the middle of the 16th Century. It was a rich Principality around Amberg, Auerbach and Sulzbach-Rosenberg, where the Maxhütte provided families with work up until 2002. The town was important to the success of the region especially as the capital of New Bohemia under Charles IV and even grew in importance under his wing. He allowed his serfs in the Sulzbacher Region to mine iron ore and the more thinly populated region of the Upper Palatinate had the necessary water and forests to feed the mountain industries.
Geopark Hirschau. In the largest Kaolinite area of Germany they have been producing porcelain clay since 1833. The name comes from the Chinese clay producing region Gaoling. In Hirschau visitors can follow the history and development of the industry that once was such a large part of the region surrounding Weiden shown in 12 stages. Countless hammer mills sprung up until in the 14th Century when the first ones were forced to close. The illegal logging of the forests made wood for burning scarce, and the natural oak and beech trees were replaced with faster growing pine forests. In 1525 the farmers even fought and lost a brief war to lift the ban on further deforestation.

In West Bohemia there was also successful mining of precious metals. Silver was especially sought after, and the town of St?íbro owes its name and fortune to this particular metal. But in the 16th Century new techniques and new sources of raw materials coupled with raids by the Hussites and the 30 Years’ War put an end to this glowing age.
Sulzbach is proud of its history in the ore industry.

It is at this stage of the journey that the Golden Road splits. The good took the ‘right’ way through Weiden and Bärnau, the bad through Wernberg and Waidhaus, which in the end proved to be the cheaper of the two. Despite the popularity of two routes
Like a spider keeping watch over its web, Amberg is actually situated several kilometres south of the Golden Road behind its still almost complete town walls, but for the tradesmen en route, it would almost certainly have opened its gates. The detour
The wealth of the Upper Palatinate and Amberg with its official residence and importance at the centre of the mining industry influenced the architecture in the area greatly. Between the ‘Hammerschlösser’ (the mansions built by the aristocracy near
