Istanbul (dpa) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was critical of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over awarding the 2020 Games to Japan, saying Monday there were "goings on" within the top sports board.

In 2013, the IOC voted to award the 2020 Games to Tokyo in the third round. Istanbul came second while Madrid was third.

"We may not have been able to bring the Olympics to my country yet, but you also know the goings on here. I have personally experienced it - unfortunately there are serious goings on," Erdogan said on Monday in Istanbul.

"They did not award us the Olympics although we deserved it," he said, addressing a gathering of a football fans, adding that it was especially upsetting since Japan has already hosted Olympic events.

Tokyo held the 1964 summer Games, while two other cities have hosted winter games.

Back in 2013, Erdogan said Istanbul‘s rejection as the 2020 Olympics host meant the IOC was turning its back on the Muslim world. "They are cutting ties with the 1.5-billion-people Muslim world," he said at the time.
