Embattled leader of Britain's UKIP ousted in party vote

London (dpa) - Members of Britain‘s UK Independence Party voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to sack their leader Henry Bolton.

Bolton has clung to power for weeks despite calls for his resignation over racist text messages sent by his former girlfriend.

The messages written by Jo Marney were published last month by the Daily Mail newspaper.

In one Marney said that Prince Harry‘s fiancée Meghan Markle, whose mother is black and father is white, will "taint" the royal family.

In another Marney reportedly said that she would never have sex with "a negro" because they are "ugly."

The 54-year-old Bolton announced his separation from 25-year-old Marney shortly after the newspaper‘s revelations.

Bolton was given a unanimous vote of no confidence from his party‘s executive committee last week, paving the way for his ouster on Saturday in an 867 to 500 vote at an emergency party meeting in Birmingham.

He told Sky News after the party vote that he would consider standing for the leadership position in the future.

"You can‘t keep a good man down, I‘m not finished in politics, so just one of those bumps in the road," Bolton told the broadcaster.

Marney voiced her support for her ex-boyfriend on Twitter: "Pffft. Bunch of muppets. My love for Henry is unconditional of political leaderships. I ain‘t going anywhere."

UKIP led a successful campaign for Britain to vote to leave the EU in June 2016. But that was followed by the resignation of charismatic leader Nigel Farage, causing support to plummet and spurring bitter infighting among senior members. It won just 2 per cent of votes in a snap general election last year.
