Egypt's synchronised swimmers need hot drinks in cold pool

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Egypt‘s synchronized swimming team is feeling the full effect of the Brazilian winter during pre-Olympic training as the athletes drink hot water and tea to fight the cold conditions.

While Rio recorded air temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius on Sunday and the Olympic pool was close to 29 degrees, that was still a far cry from the air and water temperatures back at home at this time of year.

As a result, team members swim to the side of the pool to have their hot drink from a kettle supplied by venue staff members.

"We‘re trying to find anything to keep us warm. It‘s very cold, and we‘re not used to this water and the difference in the weather," team member Nariman Aly said.

Coach Anastasiya Chepak said: "We are giving them hot tea. We are trying not to stay [in the pool] too long, to work faster so that they don‘t get cold, and we are trying to get into the training pool, which is more warm."
