Egypt blocks websites of English language Turkish media

Istanbul/Cairo (dpa) - Egypt has blocked the website of an independent Turkish newspaper in English, as it steps up censorship measures.

On Monday, users reported not being able to access the website of Hurriyet newspaper‘s English edition. The Turkish edition - the most popular newspaper in Turkey - was not blocked.

The paper is part of the independent Dogan group, seen as somewhat critical of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Meanwhile, the staunchly pro-Erdogan Daily Sabah has also been blocked, though the Turkish Sabah is accessible to users in Egypt. Turkey‘s state-broadcaster TRT has not been affected.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi is stepping up measures against the media in his country, recently blocking dozens of sites, including local independent news outlets.

Egyptian authorities have also moved against VPN providers and the Tor network, which offer users ways to circumnavigate censorship. Turkey similarly blocks tens of thousands of websites, including news portals, and is working to ban many types of VPN providers.

The two countries are diplomatically at odds. Turkey does not fully recognize al-Sissi‘s government as it says he took power in a coup against the elected government of president Mohammed Morsi from the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt has sided with Saudi Arabia in the ongoing Gulf crisis with Qatar while Turkey backs Doha. Both Qatar and Turkey are sympathetic to the Brotherhood, backing which helped spark the sanctions against Doha.
