DOSB boss Hoermann: DFB crisis not helpful for Hamburg's Olympic bid

Hamburg (dpa) - German Olympic supremo Alfons Hoermann doesn‘t rule out that the nation‘s football crisis around a 2006 World Cup payment to the ruling body FIFA could have a negative impact on Hamburg‘s bid for the 2024 Games.

With just over three weeks to go until a November 29 referendum on Hamburg‘s bid, the DOSB president Hoermann admitted in an interview with Thursday‘s edition of Die Welt paper that the football affair is "not helpful."

German football federation president (DFB) Wolfgang Niersbach, his predecessor Theo Zwanziger and former DFB general secretary Horst R Schmidt are under investigation by tax authorities on suspicion of "tax evasion in a particularly severe case" around the payment of 6.7 million euros (7.4 million dollars) from 2005 to FIFA.

Hoermann said the case must be fully cleared up but also said that "Hamburg‘s transparency law is a blessing within this context." He said that every contract of a noteworthy volume must be made public and that the Olympic bid has a strict ethics code.

"We want success, but not at all costs or at the cost of dubious methods. Everyone who sees what is currently happening at the DFB knows: That is something we certainly don‘t need," he said.

But Hoermann also stressed that the 2006 World Cup tournament in Germany was a huge success.

Pending the outcome of the referendum, Hamburg is bidding against Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and Budapest for the 2024 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee elects the host city in 2017.
