Doping whistleblower Stepanova will not pursue Rio spot through CAS

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Russian doping whistleblower Yulia Stepanova will not go before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to win the right to compete at the Rio Olympics, her manager Patrick Magyar told dpa Friday.

The 31-year-old middle distance runner had helped expose alleged Russia‘s state-sponsored doping, but the International Olymic Committee (IOC) did not let her start in Rio, arguing she was tainted by her own doping past.

A Thursday decision by CAS had raised the possibility that Stepanova could run the 800-metre distance in Rio after all.

CAS found that the IOC cannot ban Russian rowers Anastasia Karabelshikova and Ivan Podshivalov, and swimming world champion Yulia Efimova from the Games over past doping offences. CAS said the IOC banning Russians because of previously served punishments ran counter to fundamental legal rules.

However, a CAS case and similar ruling for Stepanova would not definitely have paved her the way to Rio, since it is up to national committees to select athletes for Olympics.

Stepanova could not expect her country to nominate her, given her role in exposing the doping scandal that has implicated many athletes, sports officials and politicians.
