DEVELOPING US upholds sanctions waiver under Iran nuclear deal

Washington (dpa) - The US government said Friday it will continue to waive nuclear-related sanctions against Iran in accordance with the 2015 nuclear deal, but issued new sanctions that target the country‘s ballistic missile programme.

The decision means the pact reached between Iran, the US, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany is spared from being scrapped - for now.

White House officials said it would be the last such waiver President Donald Trump will issue unless significant changes are made in negotiations with European partners.

The Treasury Department took separate action to add 14 new designations against Iranians and Iranian entities over its ballistic missile programme.

Among them is the head of the Iranian judiciary in connection with human rights abuses and censorship, as well as a crackdown on recent demonstrations against the Iranian government, the US said.

The new sanctions come on top of earlier designations announced in May, October and last week that included top Iranian defence officials and a China-based network supplying material to Iran‘s missile programme.
