New York (dpa) - A jury in a Manhattan federal court has found Turkish banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla guilty of five of six counts of violating US sanctions against Iran, a court spokeswoman told dpa on Wednesday.

Jurors, who began deliberations on December 20 before a holiday break, resumed work earlier Wednesday on the trial, which has strained relations between Washington and Ankara.

The main witness in the trial, Turkish-Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab, spent days detailing the intricate details of the so-called gold-for-oil scheme he says he used to evade sanctions.

Zarrab, who reached a plea agreement with prosecutors shortly before the trial began, pointed the finger at top Turkish officials - including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - in the alleged scheme. The case has been dismissed by Turkish authorities as "theatre," with Erdogan denying the violation of sanctions.
