Paris (dpa) - A piece of paper found near the body of the Champs-Elysee attacker bore a "handwritten message defending the cause of Daesh [Islamic State]," French anti-terror prosecutor Francois Molins says.

The piece of paper appeared to have fallen from the pocket of the attacker, Karim Cheurfi, who was born in the northern suburbs of Paris in 1977, Molins said.

Other pieces of paper found in the car bore the addresses of various police services, the prosecutors said. A sports bag in the car contained a pump-action rifle, two kitchen knives, and a secateurs.

Molins confirmed that Cheurfi had opened fire first on a police van, killing a 37-year-old officer, and then shot at other police officers on guard at the Turkish tourist office.
