Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Fiji win their country‘s first-ever Olympic medal by thrashing Britain 43-7 in the gold medal match of the rugby sevens.

Starting with an early try by Fiji captain Osea Kolinisau, Fiji outran, outplayed and outclassed Britain. Britain hardly managed to bring the ball into Fiji‘s side as the double World Series champions from the Pacific islands brought their score to 29-0 by half-time.

Late in the second half, Britain avoided total shame when Dan Norton scored and Marcus Watson kicked the conversion for the seven British points. In the last minute, the top-seeded Fijians sealed the historic win in their national sport with a try by Viliame Mata.

South Africa won bronze in another lopsided match against Japan that ended 52-14.
