Despite state of emergency, Istanbul marks International Women's Day

Istanbul (dpa) - A two-year-old state of emergency did not stop thousands of women from marching for more rights in Turkey as protesters marked International Women‘s Day on Thursday.

Demonstrators took over the Istiklal Caddesi shopping boulevard in Istanbul to denounced violence committed by men against women.

Police did not disrupt the march as it wound through central Istanbul. Unlike other marches - Istanbul‘s Gay Pride event, for example - the women‘s event was not banned.

Nonetheless, many gay men, lesbians and transsexuals mixed in with the crowd, which was undaunted by the rain.

Participants dressed like witches and carried broomsticks. Some shouted slogans like "Rapunzel, cut your hair. That guy should use the stairs" or "Cinderella, don‘t go to the ball, come to March 8 as well."

Other signs got more political: "State, keep your hands off my body."

Few of the protesters commented directly on Turkish politics, which has been in a state of flux ever since an attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.

After the coup was crushed, Erdogan pushed through a state of emergency, which still exists and bans most public demonstrations. Many of those believed to harbour anti-Erdogan sentiments have also been jailed or removed from their jobs.

One protester bucked the apolitical trend, however, carrying a sign that read: "We want a vibrator, not a dictator."

Police in Izmir blocked a planned march by female protesters, but no clashes occurred.
