Stockholm (dpa) - Danish conglomerate AP Moller-Maersk said Monday it has agreed to sell its oil and gas division to French energy giant Total in a 7.45-billion-dollar deal.

The groups said Moller-Maersk would receive shares worth 4.95 billion dollars in Total, while the French energy group would take more than 2.5 billion dollars of debt from Maersk Oil.

"The combination of Maersk Oil‘s north-western Europe businesses with our existing portfolio will position Total as the second operator in the North Sea," Total chief executive Patrick Pouyanne said in a statement.

Denmark was to be a regional operating hub for Total‘s operations in Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, the groups said.

The deal - subject to approval from competition authorities - was expected to close in the first quarter of 2018.

Lsst year, the Danish conglomerate said it would focus on transport and logistics, and planned to divest its energy division, which includes Maersk Oil.

The logistics and transport unit includes global container shipper giant Maersk Line and port operator APM Terminals.

"The agreement will strengthen the financial flexibility of AP Moller-Maersk and free up resources to focus our future growth on container shipping, ports and logistics," Moller-Maersk chief executive Soren Skou said.
