Helsinki (dpa) - Finnish police Monday formally requested pre-trial detention for the main suspect in a deadly stabbing spree last week in the south-western city of Turku.

The 18-year-old Moroccan asylum seeker is still in hospital. He was shot by police during the attack on Friday, during which he allegedly lashed out at passersby in the city centre.

The remand custody hearing, due on Tuesday, would be held via video link, court officials at the South-West Finland District Court told dpa.

Crista Granroth of the National Bureau of Investigation declined to say whether police would also request the remand of four other Moroccan nationals currently in police custody.

Police conducted their first interview with the 18-year-old main suspect on Sunday at Turku University Hospital, where he is being treated.

Police have designated the attack in Turku as murder in two cases. Eight other cases have been labelled attempted murder with "terrorist intent."

Three people, including the main suspect, remained at the Turku hospital, hospital chief executive Leena Setala told dpa.

Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini on Monday said during a speech to Finnish ambassadors that he had no words for his grief.

Like Prime Minister Juha Siipila and President Sauli Niinisto, he expressed his confidence in the Finnish judicial system and said he believed "terrorism could be defeated by a state governed by the rule of law."
