Counter-demonstrations expected at Berlin neo-Nazi rally

Berlin (dpa) - Leftist demonstrators are expected to assemble in Berlin in large numbers on Saturday to protest a neo-Nazi rally called to mark the 30th anniversary of the suicide of Hitler‘s former deputy in prison.

Authorities have issued permits for at least four counter-demonstrations which have the support of left-wing and progressive political parties like the Social Democrats, Greens and the Left as well as trade unions and anti-fascist groups.

About 500 neo-Nazis are expected to turn up for the rally and police fear clashes with left-wing extremists.

Militant leftist groups have announced they plan to "use all means" to block the march in memory of Rudolf Hess, who was held in prison after making a dramatic solo flight in 1941 from Nazi Germany to Scotland with the aim of ending the Second World War.

Hess was in prison in Berlin-Spandau and took his own life in August of 1987 at the age of 93.

Legal attempts to have the right-wing rally banned have not been successful. A spokeswoman for Berlin‘s local governing authority said the rally did not fulfil the prerequisites required to be blocked, stressing the fundamental importance of freedom of assembly.
