CORRECTION Jamaican women's bobsled team back on track after pre-race turmoil

Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - One day out from their first race at the Pyeongchang Olympics, Jamaica‘s two-woman bobsled team is "in the right mindset" despite being hit by pre-race turmoil, a team spokesperson said Monday.

The Jamaicans were in danger of losing their sled last week after their driving coach Sandra Kiriasis decided to leave the team, threatening to take the sled with her. Kiriasis, a 2006 Olympic bobsled champion with Germany, said in a statement that her coaching role had been changed without explanation, and she therefore felt she could not stay on.

The sled, which had previously been rented in Kiriasis‘ name, was then bought by Jamaican beer brewer Red Stripe, and the team now owns it outright.

But, the drama seemed to be behind the team on Monday in final training, as US-born pilot Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian and brakewoman Carrie Russell recorded the sixth fastest time.

"We‘re in the right mindset, we have the right people behind us and I think tomorrow we are going to surprise the world," Kathleen Pulito, a spokesperson for the team, said Monday.

"She was a driving coach, her departure didn‘t impact the athletes at all really.

"Canada has always been a close partner of ours, we train in Calgary very often, and their coaches said, ‘Alright, we‘ll walk the track with you, we got you.‘"

"Everybody is just coming around us, it‘s great support. It‘s only brought us all closer together," she added.

In the final training session ahead of Tuesday‘s race, Germany‘s Stephanie Schneider set the fastest time taking 51.51 seconds to complete the 1,376-metre course at the Olympic Sliding Centre.

Alysia Rissling piloted Canada‘s sled to second fastest, just 0.02 seconds further back, while the Jamaican team was 0.21 seconds off the pace.
