CORRECTION BACKGROUND The 12 charges against Palestinian protest icon Ahed Tamimi

Tel Aviv (dpa) - Human Rights Watch has accused Israel‘s prosecution of "throwing the book" at Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teen who garnered world attention after she slapped and hit Israeli soldiers in a viral video.

Tamimi, who turned 17 in prison last month, faces 12 charges and could face years in prison if found guilty.

In a seven-page indictment, the Israeli military prosecution laid out the charges, which stem from multiple confrontations with soldiers spanning back to April 2016.

Except for one charge, every incident took place on a Friday when the Tamimi family stages their weekly anti-occupation protest in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh.

Israel sees the protest as violent riots that include rock-throwing, while the Tamimi family says they have a right to oppose Israel‘s military control of the West Bank.

The full list of charges are: three counts of assault, two counts of threatening soldiers, four counts of interfering with soldiers, one count of incitement, and two counts of throwing stones.

Five charges stem from the December 15 video.

In also charging Tamimi with incitement, the military prosecution alleges that she issued "a direct call to carry out terrorist attacks."

This charge centres around a segment of the same video in which Tamimi, according to the prosecution, calls for stabbings and suicide bombings.

The prosecution cites the fact that the video was broadcast live on Facebook as evidence that she wanted to "influence public opinion."

However, Ahed‘s lawyer, Gaby Lasky, maintains that the prosecution mistranslated the teen‘s Arabic statements; Ahed stated that those violent actions would be a result of Trump‘s controversial Jerusalem move, Lasky argues.

Lasky also says that Tamimi‘s actions should be considered in the wider context of the incident occurring on her family‘s property and shortly after the teenager‘s cousin was shot in the head with a rubber bullet.

Tamimi, who was denied bail, will remain in Israeli custody for the length of the trial, which will likely span months.
