Catalan ex-leader Puigdemont, detained in Germany: I will not give up

Madrid (dpa) - Former president of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont on Saturday struck a defiant tone in his first public message since being taken into Germany custody last Sunday.

"Let it be clear to all: I will not give up, I will not resign, I will not withdraw in the face of illegitimate action from those who have lost at the polls, or the arbitrariness of those who are willing to pay the price of abandoning the rule of law and justice for ‘the unity of the fatherland,‘" Puigdemont wrote in a Twitter post.

As an inmate, Puigdemont is unable to access the internet, although the use of Skype is permitted with the supervision of prison staff. His social media accounts are therefore likely being managed by one of his associates during his detainment.

"Mr. Puigdemont does not receive any special treatment," local prison director Yvonne Radetzki told dpa. "He is in a completely normal prison building."

Puigdemont was detained by German police last Sunday at a highway rest stop near the Danish border, as he drove from Finland to Belgium, where he has been living since fleeing from Spain.

He left the country just before the Spanish government ousted his government in response to an October 1 referendum on independence that was deemed illegal by Spain‘s Constitutional Court.

The former Catalan president, for whom a Spanish judge issued a European arrest warrant last week, is wanted on charges of rebellion and sedition, and could face up to 30 years‘ imprisonment if convicted.
