Berlin (dpa) - Italy‘s 2008 Olympic 50km walk champion Alex Schwarzer has been banned for eight years and will miss the Rio Olympics, it was announced Thursday.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed Schwarzer‘s appeal of a provisional suspension handed down by the world athletics ruling body IAAF on July 8.

After serving a 45-month ban for a positive test for erythropoietin before the London Olympics, Schwarzer helped Italy win the 50km team title at the World Race Walking Team Championship in May.

A retest of a Schwarzer sample provided in January during preparations for the Rio Olympics showed traces of anabolic steroids. The CAS subsequently disqualified all competitive results by Schwarzer starting on January 1, 2016 as well as the forfeiture of medals, points and prizes.

Schwarzer had been suspended for four years in 2012 after a positive test for EPO. His girlfriend at the time, figure skating world champion Carolina Kostner, was banned for 16 months for allegedly helping him get around tests.
