Benghazi (dpa) - A car bomb went off on Friday near a mosque in eastern Libya, killing at least six civilians, local security sources said.

At least 15 others were injured in the bombing, which took place outside the mosque following congregational prayers in the town of Soloug, south of the city of Benghazi, the sources added.

The dead included Braike Ellawati, the leader of a local tribe known for its backing of an ongoing campaign launched three years by Libya‘s military strongman Khalifa Haftar against Islamist militants in Benghazi.

So far, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

The bombing comes a day after a deadly attack by rival militias on an airbase manned by forces loyal to Haftar.

Some 74 people were killed in Thursday‘s attack on the Brake al-Shati airbase in southern Libya, the town‘s mayor, Ibrahim Zami, told Libyan independent news portal al-Wasat.

Haftar is the chief of the self-styled Libyan National Army, aligned with an administration based in Libya‘s far eastern city of Tobruk.

Libya descended into anarchy following the 2011 revolt that toppled longtime autocrat Moamer Gaddafi.

Last year, a UN-backed unity government led by Fayez Serraj took over in the capital Tripoli amid international hopes of an end to the chaos in oil-rich Libya.

The Serraj government has been unable to gain recognition from the elected parliament based in Tobruk, where a rival government is also based.
