Comrades in terror: Brothers who executed attacks around the world
Two Brussels brothers, Khalid and Brahim El Bakraoui, carried out suicide bombings in Brussels, Belgian federal prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw said.

Berlin (dpa) - The following is a list of other brothers-in-arms involved in terrorist attacks around the world:
Two undated handout pictures released by French Police in Paris early 08 January 2015 show Cherif Kouachi, 32, (L) and his brother Said Kouachi, 34, (R) suspected in connection with the shooting attack at the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris, France, 07 January 2015. French police on 08 January 2015 released an appeal to the public for information, with photos of Cherif Kouachi and his brother, Said Kouachi.

KHALID and BRAHIM EL BAKRAOUI, March 22 attacks in Brussels:

Khalid, 27, carried out the bombing at Maelbeek station, Van Leeuw said.

Khalid used a false identity to rent an apartment in the Brussels neighbourhood of Forest, broadcaster RTBF said, where a shootout during a police raid last week led to the arrest of Paris terrorist attack suspect Salah Abdeslam.

In 2011, he was sentenced to five years for carjackings, after having been arrested in possession of Kalashnikov rifles, according to the Belga news agency.

Brahim, 29, was one of the suicide bombers at Brussels airport, the prosecutor said. In 2010, he was sentenced to nine years for shooting at police with a Kalashnikov during a hold-up, Belga said.

SALAH and BRAHIM ABDESLAM, November 13, 2015, attacks in Paris:

Salah, 26, a Frenchman from Molenbeek was arrested in that Brussels neighbourhood on March 18. French state prosecutor Francois Molins said Abdeslam had intended to blow himself up at the State de France stadium on November 13, but backed out.

Brahim, 31-year-old Frenchman, had lived in Belgium and blew himself up in the restaurant Comptoir Voltaire in Paris. He ran a now-shuttered bar in Molenbeek together with Salah.

CHERIF and SAID KOUACHI, January 7, 2015, attacks on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo:

Cherif, 32, was born in the 10th district of central Paris and went by the name Abu Issen, according to Le Monde. In 2008, he was convicted for forming part of a group called Buttes Chaumont, which recruited fighters for al-Qaeda between 2004 and 2006.

He was sentenced to three years, but served 18 months. After his release, he took a job in a supermarket.

Said, 34, was born in the same area of Paris on September 7, 1980. He reportedly traveled to Yemen and received military training from al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists, US media cited US officials as saying.

The brothers of Algerian descent, who were orphaned as children, were reportedly radicalized as they began attending the Adda‘wa mosque in Paris in 2003. They were killed two days after the attack when police closed in on their hideout north-east of Paris.

---------------

TAMERLAN and DZHOKHAR TSARNAEV, Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013:

Tamerlan, 26, died of gunshot and blast wounds at a Boston hospital on April 19 after a firefight with police in Watertown, just outside of Boston.

Dzhokhar, then 19, was found that same night, hiding in a dry-docked boat behind a home.

The brothers had detonated two backpacks with household pressure cookers loaded with explosives, nails and ball bearings at the marathon.

Dzhokhar was sentenced to death by execution in June 2015. The defence argued at the trial that Tamerlan was the mastermind behind the attack and Dzhokhar did not deserve the death penalty.

---------------

MOHAMMED and ABDELKADER MERAH, March 19, 2012 shootings in Toulouse:

Mohammed Merah, 23, had killed seven people - three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school and three troopers during several days of terror around Toulouse, France.

The petty criminal who converted to radical Islam and identified himself as an al-Qaeda supporter was killed three days later in his apartment.

Merah said he was acting alone, but questions remain on that claim.

His older brother Abdelkader, 29 at the time, was charged with complicity in the attacks.

Police suspect the elder Merah, who was under surveillance for links to radical Islamist groups, of having indoctrinated his sibling.
