Madrid (dpa) - Spain‘s reigning triathlon world champion Javier Gomez Noya has been forced to pull out of the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after suffering a broken arm in training.

The incident occurred Wednesday in what he described on social media Thursday as "one of those silly crashes" at the end of bike training which resulted in "a displaced fracture in the radial head" of his left arm. Surgery is planned for later Thursday.

Gomez Noya took silver at the 2012 Olympics and is a five-time world champion from 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

"I need to be realistic, there is no time to prepare and to be fit on the start line of the Games," the 33-year-old said. "The most sensible thing is to open my spot and allow someone else the chance to race.

"As you can imagine, this is a really tough time, it‘s a goal I have been working for over many years. I will keep fighting, I still have many goals in this sport, I‘m not done yet."

The men‘s triathlon is August 18 at the August 5-21 Games in Rio.
