London (dpa) - British technology firm Dyson on Tuesday announced plans to invest 2 billion pounds (2.6 billion dollars) to develop a battery powered electric car to be marketed from 2020.

"James Dyson just announced to Dyson employees that we‘ve begun work on a battery electric vehicle, due to launch in 2020," the company said on Twitter, with a copy of a message from the company‘s founder to its 400 staff.

James Dyson said the company was "recruiting aggressively" for the project.

"I‘m committed to investing 2 billion pounds on this endeavour," he said.

"The project will grow quickly from here but at this stage we will not release any information.

"Competition for new technology in the automotive industry is fierce and we must do everything we can to keep the specifics of our vehicle confidential," Dyson said in the message.

He said he was motivated to develop electric vehicles by World Health Organization data suggesting some 7 million people die annually from exposure to air pollution.

"It is our obligation to offer a solution to the world‘s largest single environmental risk," he said.
