Britain pledges support for new Gambian government, Commonwealth bid

Banjul (dpa) - Britain on Tuesday affirmed its support for Gambia‘s fledgling government and its bid to rejoin the Commonwealth, weeks after a post-election crisis forced the newly elected president to be sworn into office in another country.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson made the comments during a press conference in Banjul alongside President Adama Barrow.

A post-election standoff between Barrow and long-time autocrat Yahya Jammeh led to threats of military intervention from neighbouring countries before Jammeh agreed to step down.

Acknowledging prior "difficulties" for both sides, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said London was dedicated to strengthening its engagement on development, education, security and tourism. He also pledged closer cooperation on the issue of migration.

"We now have an opportunity to do more," Johnson said.

"We will be looking at ways in which we can develop that relationship for the benefit of both sides," Johnson said.
