Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Brazil‘s reigning gymnastic Olympic champion Arthur Zanettis lost his London 2012 title on the men‘s rings to Greek Eleftherios Petrounias Monday but was given a roaring ovation for his silver medal.

Zanettis became a national hero in Brazil when he triumphed four years ago and was considered a strong medal hope for the Brazilians this time round.

With both he and Petrounias choosing routines with 6.800 difficulty, it came down to execution. The Greek edged this 9.200 to 8.966 for a winning total of 16.000 but Zanettis still received rapturous round of applause for earning the Games‘ hosts a rare medal.

Russia‘s Denis Abliazin won bronze off another 6.800 routine with China‘s Liu Yang losing a gamble on a harder set. He failed to deliver the performance required on his 6.900 and finished fourth.

Later Monday the men‘s vault final takes place before American superstar Simone Biles chases her fourth Rio gold on the balance beam.
