Tunis (dpa) - The number of deaths in a shipwreck in which a vessel carrying migrants collided with a boat from the Tunisian Coast Guard has risen to at least 34, after divers recovered more bodies from the underwater wreckage, the Tunisian defence ministry said Monday.

Divers had initially recovered 10 bodies on Sunday, but found another 16 on Monday in the wreckage, which was located 52 metres underwater, on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea.

Eight of the migrants attempting to make their way to Italy from Tunisia had drowned in the aftermath of the collision. Some 20 migrants were initially reported missing.

Riots took place in southern Tunisia last week as a result of the accident, with protesters blaming the coastguard for the migrants‘ deaths. The Tunisian Coast Guard has said it will investigate the incident.

According to recent data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an increasing number of Tunisians are attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
