Beirut (dpa) - A car exploded on Sunday in Lebanon‘s southern city of Sidon, injuring a Palestinian official, army sources said.

Explosives detonated as the official, identified as Mohammed Hamdan, also known as Abu Hamza, opened the car‘s door, Palestinian and Lebanese army sources said.

Hamadan is believed to be a member of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, according to Lebanese media.

So far, there has been no confirmation of the explosion from Hamas. The cause of the explosion is not yet clear.

The blast took place next to Hamdan‘s home in the port city, witnesses said.

He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries to his legs, reports said.

Lebanon is home to more than 400,000 Palestinian refugees.
