Big favourite Frenzel ready to deliver gold By Gerald Fritsche and Eric Dobias, dpa

Krasnaya Polyana, Russia (dpa) - Eric Frenzel can not be overlooked when it comes to overwhelming favourites at the Sochi Olympics.

The 25-year-old German has ruled Nordic combined skiing over the past years and is tipped to add silverware at the RusSki jumping and ski centre to his bronze from the 2010 team event and seven medals from world championships, including individual golds in 2011 and 2013.

Frenzel has three opportunities to strike, starting with Wednesday‘s normal hill event.

And nothing indicates that the young man is feeling any pressure despite the huge expectations.

"You have to accept this role. The situation is not to my disadvantage. I am not overwhelmed as long as I don‘t create any problems for myself," he said.

"You can not compete feeling too sure. You need a certain amount of confidence and that‘s what I gained. But I won‘t just happen. You must make sure that everything comes together on the day. If that is the case a lot can happen.

Frenzel boasts seven season victories for a career total of 22 and Frenchman Jason Lamy Chappuis, who won the normal hill gold in 2010 and also one world title each in 2011 and 2013, is absolutely convinced that "he (Frenzel) will win."

Frenzel dismissed the claim, insisting that "he can as well. It is my job to jump and ski well."

The strong Americans, Norwegians, Austrians and Japanese will also aim to spoil the Frenzel festival on the difficult jumping hill and the hilly cross-country ski course.

"They (the slopes) are quite tough. The uphills are hard, you can hardly relax on the course," Frenzel said.

Coach Hermann Weinbuch is also happy with his star who has developed into a team leader since his first world title to fill a void after the retirement of Ronny Ackermann.

"He shows responsibility within the team and discusses issues with us coaches. It is important for him that things are going well within the team," Weinbuch said.

"But that doesn‘t mean that all only profit from Eric. He needs the group as much. He knows that and acts accordingly. Thats why things are going so well."

Harmony also includes those close to him, as girlfriend Laura and their son Philipp will be in attendance when he goes for gold.

"It is always a good feeling for me when they are there. They enjoy all the trips. They even did it now despite a lot of hardship," he said.
