Berlin's much-delayed new airport must already replace 750 screens

Berlin (dpa) - Despite the fact that it has yet to serve a single passenger, the long-delayed new international airport for the German capital Berlin will have to replace 750 now-obsolete information screens before it finally opens.

The screens had been installed in 2012, before the airport missed a revised opening date, and are now technologically outdated, a spokesman for the airport said on Thursday.

Some 100 of the screens could be transferred for use in Tegel airport in the north-west of the city, but the others will most likely be disposed of.

The cost of replacing the screens will be 500,000 euros (617,000 dollars), the spokesman said, confirming an earlier report in the BZ newspaper.

The replacements would have been necessary even if the airport had been operational as planned, he said.

Originally set to open in 2011, the new international Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER), located next to the city‘s second airport Schoenefeld on the south-eastern outskirts of the capital, is currently scheduled to begin operations in the autumn of 2020. It has been beleaguered by technical snafus and cost and schedule overruns.
