Madrid (dpa) - Basque separatist group ETA says it will hand over its weapons on Saturday, the BBC reported, citing a letter it obtained from the group.

"After giving up all its weaponry (arms and explosives) to Basque civil society representatives [ETA] now is a disarmed organization," the letter said.

However, the group said "enemies of peace" could still disrupt the process ahead of "disarmament day" on Saturday.

"The only real guarantee to succeed are the thousands of people gathering tomorrow in Bayonne [in south-western France] supporting the disarmament," ETA added.

From 1968 to 2010, ETA was engaged in a bloody campaign to carve out an independent Basque state from parts of northern Spain and southern France, leaving more than 800 people dead.

At the end of 2011, ETA announced the end of its armed struggle. The group has not committed any attacks since, but disarmament has so far not proceeded.
